If you’ve been following me for some time, you must be aware that dandelions hold a special place as one of my favorite flowers and I go to them daily. This often disregarded “weed” offers numerous benefits for both our physical well-being and spiritual essence, granted we open ourselves to its wisdom.

On a spiritual level, dandelion teaches us to radiate our inner light with courage and authenticity. When we find ourselves engulfed in shadows, we can call upon dandelion to safeguard our spirits and nurture us as we reclaim the light.

This humble flower works wonders for our physical health by aiding our resilient livers in detoxification, strengthening our immune systems, and combating harmful free radicals. It possesses soothing properties that alleviate internal and external inflammation, making it particularly beneficial for joint care. Additionally, dandelion’s antibacterial and antifungal characteristics make it an excellent herbal ally for treating minor cuts and burns.

Feel free to try out this dandelion oil using my recipe below. It can be a delightful addition to ritual baths, imbuing them with the essence of dandelion and providing relief for a weary body. You may also use it as a moisturizer during a loving self-massage or transform it into a salve to heal dry hands, especially for those who tend to their gardens.

MATERIALS

Dandelions

2 16 oz mason jars

Chopstick

Coffee filter and rubber band

Fine mesh strainer

Cheesecloth

INSTRUCTIONS

Begin by harvesting enough dandelion flowers to fill a 16 oz mason jar. I personally like to communicate my intention for using the plants as medicine.

As you harvest, express your gratitude to the plants through an offering, such as a song, a crystal, or a strand of your hair. Ensure that you leave an ample amount for the pollinators and avoid harvesting more than necessary.

Wash the dandelion flowers to remove any excess dirt or bugs, and allow them to dry.

Sterilize the jar you will be using and thoroughly wash your hands.

Gently place the dandelions in the 16 oz mason jar, avoiding packing them tightly or overfilling.

Fill the jar with olive oil (or another oil of your choice) until all the plant matter is submerged.

Use a chopstick to carefully maneuver the plants and eliminate any trapped air. Add more oil if needed.

Cover the jar with a coffee filter secured by a rubber band.

Label the jar with the date and contents, then place it in a sunny spot to steep for approximately two weeks, or half a lunar cycle.

Shake the jar every day or every other day to agitate the plant matter.

After two weeks, using clean hands and a new sterilized jar, strain the plant matter from the oil by pouring it through a fine mesh strainer.

To ensure no small particles remain, strain the oil once more using cheesecloth.

Congratulations! You now have your final dandelion oil. Don’t forget to label it with the date and contents. Enjoy the fruits of your labor!

At home we use this oil daily with a teaspoon before food, assisting the liver in such a gentle way.
