RITUAL OF CREATING AN ALTAR
In my extensive travels around the world, I’ve come to observe a remarkable recurring pattern across diverse cultures and belief systems—the presence of various types of altars. Even on my home island, altars abound, gracing every household and serving as a place of homage to ancestors. These sacred spaces allow people to ground themselves before embarking on their daily endeavors, reconnecting with their roots and ancestral heritage. It saddens me that this tradition seems to be lost in Western civilization, as it holds immense importance, especially in our fast-paced modern world.
Lately, I have been constructing altars throughout my home, creating sacred spaces in each room. These sanctuaries feature elements like fresh flowers placed in repurposed V bottles, candles, crystals, river stones, photographs, icons, feathers, shells, and more. As I embarked on this endeavor, I noticed a profound shift in the energy and the way I felt while passing by these designated areas of my home. Even Ziggy, my little one, built his own special altar in his room, and witnessing the joy and vitality it brought to him warmed my heart.
Given these experiences, we felt it would be valuable to create a guide to assist you in building your own altar, enabling you to cultivate a sacred space that resonates with your spirit and enhances your well-being.
Practices – Rituals Altars serve as a foundation for our healing practices, offering a stable space for grounding and clearing our energy.
When you seek to make changes in your life, consider rearranging the items on your altar.
Your altar can be situated anywhere in your home that holds significance for you. It could be on top of your dresser or nestled in a small corner of your room. Alternatively, you can fashion a portable altar by neatly arranging your sacred objects within a cloth or a compact wooden table. If you’re fortunate, your altar might reside outdoors, concealed within your cherished spot in nature.
Keep in mind that you can always manifest your altar by arranging energetically resonant items before you. It is most beneficial to adorn your altar with gifts from nature, such as treasures you’ve discovered during moments of communion with the natural world. Additionally, items given to you by loved ones hold a special significance.
RITUAL FOR CREATING YOUR ALTAR
Take a moment to contemplate the intention behind your altar. Whether it’s to safeguard your space, establish a connection with your guides, or honor a specific project you’re manifesting, sit with this purpose.
Start by laying down a cloth on your altar. Choose a fabric or scarf that holds personal significance, or opt for a color associated with your intention.
Place items on your altar that symbolize the specific intentions you’re working with. For example, if you’re focusing on ancestral work, include an image or keepsake from your ancestors. Additionally, have representations of each element positioned in their corresponding directions.
For instance:
Wind in the East (a found feather, a pen and paper, a pipe, a smoke cleansing blend like franks tears)
Fire in the South (a candle in colors specifically tied to your intention)
Water in the West (a blessed bowl or chalice of water usually a precious metal like vintage silver, holy water)
Earth in the North (salt, a crystal, seeds)
Ensure that your altar remains refreshed and tidy. Treat it with reverence akin to a temple or sacred space. Add fresh flowers, change the water regularly, and keep the area free from ashes.
Visit this space daily and spend at least 10-15 minutes in silence and stillness, connecting with the healing energy you’ve cultivated.
